Back to the Spawning Ground (only this time as a BUDS Instructor)
To become a BUD/s instructor, I first had to attend a three week
Navy Instructor school. In class with me were a couple of SEAL Team One
buddies, and a Chief from SEAL Team Three.
I was proctor of BUD/s Class 192 - exactly 50 classes from mine (One
of these young men - Ens. Cassidy,
back row, left corner - advanced from the Teams to become an astronaut and
wrapped up his outer space mission, STS 127, July 2009).
The day after this picture on the beach was taken, I met my wife at a Class 192 party
at the
NAB beach cabana's in Coronado. She was 23 at the time (still a knock-out
to this day!) and I tried to get her to
participate in a bikini contest the students were hosting...but she refused (her roommate actually won it!).
It was during this time as a BUD/s instructor I met a commodity trading fellow named Larry Williams who would influence my life as I never would have imagined. I taught myself how to trade the commodity futures markets in late 1993/early 1994. But when I found myself in a position leveraging 150,000lbs of coffee in the Spring of 1994, I remember the author of the commodity trading book I was reading mention he resided in San Diego County. I had to look him up! I eventually found him :20 minutes up the coast from me and when visiting my girlfriend in San Diego's North County, I would occasionally stop by for some guidance. The rest of my story with Larry is history...
I finished college during my time as an instructor and just six months after separating from the Navy (at the age of 31), my beautiful girlfriend and I were married in her hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. Now in my mid-40's, I am a married father of two residing in Idaho - near Yellowstone/Jackson Hole, WYO. I have been in the financial industry since, but my love for the Teams, the Navy, and 'what's best for this great country' continues...sometimes hauntingly. Patriot always.
